John Hudson Dilgen Death, Obituary: John Hudson Dilgen, 23, of Staten Island, New York, passed away on April 19, 2026, in Tottenville, leaving behind a legacy defined by courage, compassion, and an extraordinary commitment to helping others.
Born on July 20, 2002, in Brooklyn, New York, to Faye Purpura Dilgen and John Dilgen, John Hudson moved with his family to Tottenville at the age of one, where he was raised and surrounded by a close-knit community that watched him grow into a remarkable young man. He attended P.S. 1 and I.S. 34 and was a proud member of Cub Pack 21, experiences that helped shape his early sense of community, friendship, and leadership.
From birth, John Hudson lived with Epidermolysis Bullosa (EB), a rare genetic condition that brought immense challenges. Yet rather than be defined by his diagnosis, he became a powerful and passionate advocate for those living with EB. With charisma, determination, and a voice far beyond his years, he dedicated himself to raising awareness and inspiring change. His advocacy work reached far and wide, earning him recognition as one of Staten Island’s most influential people in 2016—a reflection of the real and lasting impact he made.
John Hudson’s life was filled with joy, curiosity, and love for the things that brought him happiness. He found comfort and creativity in cooking for his family, and he held a deep appreciation for Japanese culture, Disney pin collecting and trading, Marvel stories, and the New York Rangers. These passions reflected his vibrant personality and the joy he brought into everyday life.
Above all, John Hudson’s greatest hope was to make a difference through his work with the EB Research Partnership—and he did. His advocacy, strength, and authenticity touched countless lives and continue to inspire those who carry his mission forward. He will be remembered not only for what he endured, but for how he chose to live: with love, purpose, and unwavering generosity of spirit.
He is survived by his loving mother, Faye; his sister, Kalilla; his brother, Teak; his brother-in-law, Pascal; his maternal grandparents, Peter and Cathy Purpura; his paternal grandmother, Enea Dilgen; and many loving aunts, uncles, and cousins. He was predeceased by his father, John Dilgen, his paternal grandfather, John Dilgen, and his maternal grandmother, Mildred Burns.
Friends may visit on Wednesday from 2–4 PM and 7–9 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday at Our Lady Help of Christians RC Church at 11:00 AM.
John Hudson Dilgen will be deeply missed, forever cherished, and always remembered by all who knew and loved him.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to organizations that supported his journey and continue the fight against EB, honoring both his life and his enduring mission to make a difference.
