Motorized Scooter Rider, Bicyclist Died in Queensboro Bridge Crash During NYC Morning Rush
A tragic collision on the Queensboro Bridge during Thursday morning’s rush hour has claimed the lives of two men, according to police.
Authorities say a 39-year-old man riding a stand-up motorized scooter was traveling westbound in the bike lane at approximately 8:20 a.m. when he collided head-on with a 35-year-old bicyclist riding in the opposite direction. The impact of the crash was severe, leaving both individuals critically injured at the scene.
Emergency responders quickly arrived and transported both men to Weill Cornell Medical Center at NewYork-Presbyterian Queens. Despite efforts by medical personnel, both victims were later pronounced dead.
As of Thursday evening, officials had not released the identities of the victims, pending notification of their families.
The fatal incident has drawn attention from transportation safety advocates. The nonprofit organization Transportation Alternatives expressed deep concern following the crash, describing the event as heartbreaking. The group also renewed calls for stronger safety regulations, including support for proposed legislation known as “Ride Safe, Ride Right,” which would restrict the sale of high-speed e-bikes capable of exceeding 20 miles per hour.
Investigations into the circumstances surrounding the collision are ongoing as authorities work to determine contributing factors and assess safety conditions along the bridge’s bike lanes.
The incident has added to growing concerns about shared-use pathways in busy urban areas, particularly during peak commuting hours, where increased traffic can heighten the risk of serious accidents.
