Marana, Arizona — The community is mourning the tragic death of Mikaela Durfey, 36, who was fatally shot outside her home on West Alegria Drive on May 25. According to authorities, Durfey was shot by her ex-husband, Brian Schnurr, 37, in an apparent act of violence that has shocked neighbors and residents alike.

Police responded to reports of gunfire around 5:05 p.m., discovering Durfey suffering from gunshot wounds. Despite lifesaving efforts, she was pronounced dead at the scene. The investigation revealed that Schnurr, who had allegedly fled the scene in a blue Dodge Challenger, later committed suicide nearby in a desert area.

Shocking details emerged that the couple’s two young children, both under age four, witnessed the violence. Authorities confirmed that Schnurr had picked up the children and placed them in the vehicle before the shooting. Fortunately, the children were found unharmed inside the car near North Silverbell Road, where officers located them with the assistance of the Pima County Sheriff’s Department air unit.

Neighbors described hearing multiple gunshots that evening, expressing their shock and sadness at the incident. Longtime resident Charles Wipperman called it “very sad and shocking,” emphasizing the tragedy of losing life to violence.

Police confirmed that the case is being treated as a murder-suicide, with Durfey identified as a licensed counselor and Schnurr as a local chiropractor. Court records indicate Durfey had filed for divorce from Schnurr in July 2025.
