Authorities in New Jersey are investigating a boating accident that occurred off the coast of Long Beach Island (LBI), where one person died and another was injured after being thrown from a vessel in rough water conditions.

According to reports from New Jersey State Police and local marine officials, the incident happened in waters near the Barnegat Bay and Intracoastal Waterway area, a region frequently used for recreational boating during warmer months. Investigators say the boat reportedly struck a large wake while traveling offshore, which caused both occupants to be ejected into the water.

After the individuals fell overboard, the unmanned vessel reportedly continued moving and struck one of them. Emergency responders, including marine units and nearby boaters, quickly arrived at the scene after distress calls were made. One of the victims was rescued and transported for medical attention, while the other was pronounced dead following the accident.

Officials have not released the identities of those involved pending family notification. The injured survivor is expected to recover, according to early reports, though the full extent of their injuries has not been confirmed.

The New Jersey State Police Marine Services Bureau is leading the investigation, working alongside local agencies and the U.S. Coast Guard to determine the exact sequence of events. Authorities are also reviewing whether safety equipment, including engine cutoff systems and life jackets, were in use at the time of the incident.
