In Loving Memory of Kurt Smith
With profound sadness and heartfelt gratitude, we remember the life of Kurt Smith — a beloved colleague, mentor, friend, and steady presence whose passing has left an immeasurable void in the hearts of those who knew and worked beside him.
The loss of Kurt has deeply impacted the entire KUTV News family, where he served as Chief Photographer and Director of News Operations. More than a leader behind the scenes, Kurt was the kind of person who shaped the culture of a newsroom simply by being himself: calm under pressure, endlessly patient, deeply knowledgeable, and always kind.
In television news, there are people who make broadcasts happen, and then there are people who hold entire teams together. Kurt was one of those rare individuals. He was the reassuring voice in the earpiece during stressful live shots, the problem-solver when technology failed, and the steady hand guiding younger photographers and editors through the fast-paced demands of the job. So many came to the station because of Kurt — drawn not only by his talent and reputation, but by the environment of encouragement and respect he created.
Those who worked alongside him knew his leadership style wasn’t built on ego or authority. It was built on patience, teaching, and genuine care for people. He made others better simply by believing in them.
One memory shared by coworkers perfectly captures who Kurt was. During the uncertainty of the early COVID-19 pandemic, when fear and confusion surrounded even the smallest interactions, Kurt personally delivered broadcasting equipment to a colleague forced to anchor from home while sick. He carefully laid everything out on the porch with thoughtful detail, making sure every piece could be understood and assembled. It was more than technical support — it was compassion in action. That was Kurt: someone who quietly went above and beyond without needing recognition.
Outside the newsroom, Kurt was remembered for his warmth, humor, and love for adventure. He shared a bond with fellow “west side kids” who grew up in Kearns, carrying pride in his roots and friendships that lasted far beyond the workplace. Those who knew him best also knew his love for Utah’s red rock landscapes and Jeep adventures — places where he found peace, joy, and freedom.
But perhaps the greatest reflection of Kurt’s life is found in the people mourning him now. The heartbreak being felt across the newsroom speaks volumes about the kind of man he was. Not just respected — loved.
To his wife, Steph, and to all of his family and loved ones, countless people are holding you close in thought and prayer during this incredibly painful time. Thank you for sharing Kurt with so many others whose lives were made brighter because of him.
As we remember Kurt Smith, we remember a man whose impact cannot be measured only by career accomplishments, but by the kindness he extended, the calm he brought to chaos, and the countless people he helped along the way.
His voice may no longer echo through the IFB line, but his presence will forever remain in the memories, lessons, laughter, and friendships he leaves behind.
May he rest peacefully, surrounded by endless skies, red rock trails, and the love of those who will never forget him.
