Joey Avila Death, Obituary: We are deeply saddened by the tragic loss of Joey Avila, a longtime member of the community and a dedicated board member of Prism Health North Texas. His passing is felt profoundly by all who had the privilege of knowing him, working alongside him, and witnessing the depth of his commitment to others.
Joey’s life was defined by service, advocacy, and an unwavering belief in equity and justice. For nearly three decades, he was a passionate and outspoken voice for change, dedicating his time and energy to supporting the HIV/AIDS and LGBTQ+ communities, advancing initiatives within the Black community, and working to expand access to healthcare for those most in need.
His impact reached far beyond words. Joey consistently turned advocacy into action—raising critical funds for organizations across North Texas, volunteering his time, and remaining actively engaged in civic life through his involvement with the City of Dallas, including participation in the Citizens Police Academy and various city committees. His efforts reflected a deep understanding that meaningful change requires both courage and compassion.
Beyond his accomplishments, Joey will be remembered most for his kindness, his gentle spirit, and the sincerity with which he connected to others. He made people feel seen, heard, and valued, leaving behind a legacy not only of service, but of humanity and care.
