Bill, a 64-year-old assistant district attorney in Jefferson County’s Bessemer Cutoff, has dedicated nearly 30 years of his life to serving justice and his community. According to the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA), the tragic incident occurred Sunday afternoon around 3:00 p.m. near the Pell City Sail Club on Logan Martin Lake in St. Clair County.
Authorities say Bill was serving as a spotter during an active sailboat race when he attempted to transition from a sailboat to an unoccupied jon boat. During that process, he entered the water and, heartbreakingly, did not resurface.
Since then, multiple agencies have been working tirelessly in search and recovery efforts, continuing through the evening and resuming again as soon as possible.
