In Loving Memory of Katelynn Strate
With profound sadness and heavy hearts, we remember the life of Katelynn Strate, a young mother whose life was tragically taken in a heartbreaking act of violence that has left her family, friends, and community in deep mourning.
At only 17 years old, Katelynn had her whole life ahead of her — filled with dreams, hopes, and the joy of preparing to welcome her baby into the world. Instead, her journey was cut short in an unimaginable tragedy during what authorities describe as a road rage incident north of New Orleans.
According to reports, Katelynn was shot in the head during the incident, leaving her critically wounded. In a desperate effort to save her unborn child, doctors performed an emergency C-section just 30 minutes later, delivering her baby girl two months premature, weighing only 3 pounds, 11 ounces.
In one final act of love, Katelynn was kept on life support long enough to give her daughter a fighting chance at life. Though she sadly passed away shortly after, her bravery and sacrifice as a mother will forever be remembered.
Her death has left behind overwhelming grief and countless unanswered questions. What should have been a season of excitement, anticipation, and new beginnings has instead become a time of mourning and heartbreak.
Authorities have arrested Barry West, who now faces accusations in connection with this devastating incident. While the legal process continues, it does little to lessen the pain of a young life stolen too soon.
Katelynn was more than this tragedy. She was a daughter, a girlfriend, a friend, and now forever a mother. Those who knew her will remember her not for the violence that took her, but for the love she gave, the dreams she carried, and the precious life she brought into this world.
