Tim Barry Death, Obituary: In Loving Memory of Tim Barry

In Loving Memory of Tim Barry

With profound sadness and heavy hearts, we honor the life and legacy of Tim Barry — a devoted advocate, humble leader, brilliant strategist, and unwavering supporter of Black businesses and community empowerment in Anacostia. His passing leaves behind not only grief, but also a tremendous legacy of service, compassion, and commitment to uplifting others.

Tim Barry was the kind of person whose work often happened behind the scenes, yet whose impact could be seen everywhere throughout the community. So many of the opportunities, businesses, and successes that now stand proudly in Anacostia and throughout Washington, D.C., exist in part because of his dedication and belief in people who simply needed someone willing to fight for them.

There would be no Check It Enterprises, no Go-Go Museum, no We Act, and no Darnell’s on MLK Avenue without Tim and the work he tirelessly pushed forward. He fought behind closed doors for Black businesses and entrepreneurs who too often faced barriers placed in front of them by systems that claimed to support progress while quietly working against it.

Tim understood the realities many people were afraid to speak openly about. He sat in rooms where decisions were made, witnessed the resistance firsthand, and still continued pushing forward because he genuinely believed in fairness, opportunity, and community growth. He believed Black-owned businesses deserved the same investment, support, and chance to thrive as anyone else.

Many people credit Muriel Bowser for bringing talented people like Tim into positions where they could help create real change. Through his work with Deputy Mayor’s Office for Planning and Economic Development, Tim became a driving force behind projects and developments that transformed lives and strengthened the community.

He once spoke about how groundbreaking it was to see community members successfully gain ownership of buildings and opportunities that had historically been difficult to access. Yet what mattered most to Tim was not recognition — it was results. He cared about seeing people win. He cared about seeing neighborhoods thrive. He cared about helping small businesses survive and grow.

Even after leaving government work, Tim continued walking through the community, supporting entrepreneurs, encouraging local businesses, and helping people however he could. That was simply who he was. He was gentle, humble, intelligent, and deeply committed to the people around him. He never sought the spotlight, yet his influence quietly shaped the future of countless individuals and organizations.

For those who knew him personally, Tim was more than an advocate or leader — he was a trusted friend and a compassionate human being. He listened. He encouraged. He showed up for people. He carried himself with grace and humility despite the challenges he faced.

His passing is especially heartbreaking because so many believed he was continuing to fight courageously through his health struggles. Conversations about treatment and recovery brought hope, and many believed better days were ahead. Yet life can change so suddenly, leaving loved ones shocked and devastated by the speed of loss.

As family, friends, colleagues, and community members mourn his passing, prayers continue to surround his wife, children, and everyone who loved him deeply. The pain of losing someone so impactful is impossible to fully measure, but so too is the gratitude for the life he lived and the countless lives he changed along the way.

Tim Barry leaves behind a legacy far greater than titles or positions. His legacy lives in the businesses he helped open, the dreams he helped make possible, the people he encouraged, and the communities he strengthened through his quiet determination and belief in others.

His story serves as a reminder to cherish our loved ones, support our communities, and never take tomorrow for granted. Life is precious, and people like Tim remind us how powerful one life dedicated to helping others can truly be.

Though Tim Barry may no longer walk among us, his impact will continue to be felt throughout Anacostia, Washington, D.C., and beyond for generations to come.

Rest peacefully, Tim.
Thank you for fighting for the people, believing in the community, and helping open doors that changed lives forever.
You will always be remembered, deeply appreciated, and greatly missed.
