According to officials, Wael was found deceased inside his family’s home on Saturday, July 4, after a generator had been running in the basement. Authorities believe he died from suspected carbon monoxide poisoning, a silent and deadly hazard that can build up rapidly when gasoline-powered generators are operated inside enclosed spaces.<\/p>\n
The tragedy unfolded after powerful storms swept across southeast Michigan, leaving hundreds of homes damaged and thousands of residents without electricity. Like many families attempting to cope with the outages, Wael’s household was using a generator when the heartbreaking incident occurred.<\/p>\n
Dearborn Fire Chief Joseph Murray warned that generators should never be operated inside homes, garages, or basements because of the deadly carbon monoxide they produce.<\/p>\n
“The emissions coming out of those generators or any gas-powered motor are deadly, especially if they accumulate enough,” Murray said.<\/p>\n
Carbon monoxide is an odorless, colorless gas that can quickly become fatal without warning, making tragedies like this especially devastating and preventable.<\/p>\n
