Margaret “Peg” Foster, a longtime administrator at Crestwood School District, was shot and killed by her husband at their Susquehanna County home in an apparent murder-suicide, authorities said.

State police responded to a home in Jackson Twp. to conduct a welfare check on Tuesday, Susquehanna County Acting Coroner Jessica Chiaramonte said.

Responding officers found Foster and her husband, Andrew Kelemen, deceased inside the home, Chiaramonte said.

State police, in a news release, said troopers were contacted by a local pastor who requested a welfare check after he had been unable to reach Foster and Kelemen. The pastor said they had been going through personal difficulties related to a separation and pending divorce.

Police said a preliminary investigation revealed that Kelemen, 61, fatally shot Foster, 60, before taking his own life. The investigation is ongoing, police said.

The family requests privacy, Chiaramonte said.

Foster served as principal of Fairview Elementary School and was appointed Crestwood district superintendent in 2015. However, the district school board rescinded her appointment, after which she filed a federal lawsuit, claiming the district violated her constitutional due process rights under the 14th Amendment.

A federal judge dismissed the suit in 2017.
