In Loving Memory of James “JB” Bowman
It is with profound sorrow and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of James “JB” Bowman, a man whose life was defined by service, leadership, and an unwavering commitment to others. JB’s passing leaves an immeasurable void in the lives of his family, friends, and the entire community he so faithfully served. Though words can never fully capture the depth of this loss, they can honor a life lived with purpose, courage, and heart.
For 43 years, JB dedicated himself to the Wilson Fire Company, a commitment that spanned nearly a lifetime and touched countless lives. What began as a call to serve grew into a legacy of leadership, mentorship, and steadfast devotion. Throughout his years with the company, JB held many roles, each one embraced with humility and determination. From firefighter to officer, from committee leader to Chief, and most recently as Trustee, JB never sought recognition—only results, progress, and the well-being of those around him.
As Chief, JB led with calm authority and deep respect for tradition, while always looking ahead to build a stronger future. He understood that leadership was not about titles, but about trust, responsibility, and standing shoulder to shoulder with his fellow firefighters. He believed in doing the job the right way, taking care of his people, and ensuring the department was prepared—no matter the challenge.
Beyond the fireground, JB’s influence was felt in the countless committees and projects he oversaw. His fingerprints are on so much of what the Wilson Fire Company is today. He was a problem-solver, a planner, and a steady presence when decisions mattered most. Whether it was equipment upgrades, operational improvements, or long-term planning, JB approached every task with dedication and pride.
And then there were the moments of camaraderie—the shared laughter, long conversations, and the well-known Manhattans that became part of the fellowship he cherished so deeply. JB understood that brotherhood was just as important as service, and he made sure that the bonds between members were strong, genuine, and lasting. Those moments will live on in stories told, glasses raised, and memories shared for years to come.
JB was more than a firefighter or a leader—he was a mentor, a friend, and a pillar of the community. He believed in showing up, lending a hand, and doing what needed to be done without hesitation. His legacy is not only written in the history of the fire company, but in the lives he shaped, the confidence he instilled in others, and the example he set through quiet strength and selfless service.
To his family, we extend our deepest condolences and gratitude. Thank you for sharing JB with all of us for so many years. His dedication required sacrifice not only from him, but from those who loved him most. Please know that his firehouse family stands with you, just as JB always stood for us.
JB, your watch may have ended, but your legacy endures. The lessons you taught, the standards you set, and the brotherhood you strengthened will continue to guide us forward. Rest easy knowing that your work lives on and that the company you loved remains in capable hands.
We have it from here, Chief.
Your service is complete.
Your memory will never fade.
