GEORGETOWN COUNTY, S.C. — Authorities are investigating a tragic boating incident that claimed the life of a Conway man following a collision on the Sampit River on Saturday morning. The South Carolina Department of Natural Resources (SCDNR) confirmed that two boats collided near the Campbell Boat Landing area in Maryville, resulting in one fatality and prompting an active and ongoing investigation.
According to preliminary reports, emergency responders and SCDNR officers were dispatched to the scene shortly after the crash occurred. Despite swift response efforts, one individual sustained fatal injuries in the collision. The Georgetown County Coroner’s Office later identified the victim as Wendell “Jay” Holbert III, 49, of Conway. Officials confirmed that Holbert died as a result of injuries sustained in the boating crash.
