John Mark Death, Obituary: With profound sadness and heartfelt respect, we honor the life and legacy of John Mack, a devoted law enforcement officer, beloved family man, loyal friend, and proud member of the Jersey City Police Department, who passed away at the age of 43.
Known affectionately to many as “Johnny Boy,” Officer Mack’s passing has left an immeasurable void in the hearts of his family, fellow officers, friends, and the entire Jersey City community. His loss is being deeply felt by all who had the privilege of knowing him, working beside him, or simply crossing paths with him during his remarkable life of service.
John dedicated more than two decades of his life to protecting and serving his city with pride, courage, and commitment. Joining the Jersey City Police Department in 2005, he followed in the footsteps of his father, a retired Jersey City police officer, continuing a family tradition rooted in public service and dedication to community.
Throughout his career, Officer Mack served across several districts, spending much of his time on midnight patrol in the East District while also serving in the North and South districts. Whether responding to calls, watching over neighborhoods in the quiet overnight hours, or supporting fellow officers, John approached his work with professionalism and heart.
But those who knew him understood that John Mack was much more than a badge and uniform.
He was a larger-than-life personality whose energy could instantly light up a room. Friends and loved ones remember him as sharp, stylish, and unforgettable — someone who carried himself with confidence, humor, and unmistakable charisma. He loved fashion and jewelry, took pride in his appearance, and had a presence that naturally drew people in.
Yet beneath the humor and bold personality was a man with a deeply caring spirit.
John was known for his laughter, his jokes, and his ability to bring joy to those around him. He could make people smile even on difficult days. He was the kind of person who made gatherings feel warmer simply by being there. But more importantly, he was compassionate, loyal, and generous — someone whose heart matched the strength of his personality.
To his family, John was a cherished son, relative, and loved one whose absence now leaves an unimaginable pain. To his fellow officers, he was a brother in blue — someone who understood the sacrifices, pressures, and bonds that come with serving in law enforcement. Police departments often become families within themselves, and the grief now shared throughout the JCPD reflects just how deeply respected and loved John was among his colleagues.
