Dallas, TX — Sung Rae Cho, 63, a longtime business owner and active member of the North Texas Korean Chamber of Commerce, tragically died Tuesday in a shooting at K Towne Plaza, authorities confirmed. The incident also claimed the life of a second victim, with three others sustaining injuries. Police identified 69-year-old Seung Ho Han, owner of Kkanbu Sushi, as the suspect in what officials say stemmed from a business dispute.
Cho, who operated within the local Korean business community for decades, was remembered by colleagues and leaders as a devoted entrepreneur and a driving force behind K Towne Plaza’s development. “He was instrumental in supporting and growing our community,” said Daniel Shin, president of the Korean Chamber of Commerce North Texas. Shin, who knew both the victims and the suspect personally, described the tragedy as “unbearable and traumatizing,” highlighting the shock felt by Koreans locally and abroad.
On Wednesday, North Texas Korean leaders gathered at the Korean Cultural Center of Dallas to honor the victims, laying wreaths and flowers at a dedicated altar. Community members expressed grief and solidarity, emphasizing support for the injured, including the property owner still hospitalized. Former Carrollton councilman Young Sung described the events as “horrifying, especially seeing people I personally know,” reflecting the depth of loss felt across the region.
The Consulate of the Republic of Korea in Dallas urged calm, noting the importance of avoiding unverified information while the investigation continues. Leaders pledged ongoing support for families affected and plan to establish donation funds to aid them during this difficult time.
Cho’s legacy of community engagement, mentorship, and entrepreneurship leaves a lasting imprint on North Texas. His passing serves as a somber reminder of the fragility of life and the strength of communal bonds in times of tragedy.
