A shooting near Durango Skate Park on Tuesday afternoon has led to an active investigation by the Durango Police Department after one man was injured in the incident along a busy section of the Animas River Trail.

Police reported that the incident occurred at approximately 1:17 p.m. in the 1300 block of Roosa Avenue, an area located between the skate park and nearby pickleball courts. The location is typically active with families, pedestrians, and recreational users, making the sudden violence especially concerning for the community.

Officers arrived within minutes of the call and immediately began providing emergency aid to the victim, a man believed to be in his 30s. The Durango Fire Protection District responded shortly after, arriving around 1:27 p.m. Emergency crews worked to stabilize the injured man before transporting him by ambulance to Mercy Hospital. His current medical condition has not been released.

While first responders attended to the victim, police secured the surrounding area and began investigating the scene. Authorities also reported that a separate individual attempted to leave the area shortly after the shooting. That person was detained by officers at approximately 1:35 p.m. and taken into custody. Officials have not confirmed whether the detained individual is a suspect, witness, or otherwise involved in the incident.

Durango Police Department spokesperson Amanda Garrison stated that there is currently no indication of an ongoing threat to the public. She noted that the situation appears to be contained, though officers remain in the area as the investigation continues.

Residents have been asked to avoid the Animas River Trail near Roosa Avenue while law enforcement processes evidence and conducts interviews. The area, normally known for recreation and community activity, has been temporarily restricted as investigators work at the scene.

Authorities are reviewing witness statements, surveillance footage, and other evidence to determine what led to the shooting. At this time, no motive has been released, and it remains unclear whether those involved were known to one another.
